Breaktime: The Lie of Success

The Lie of Success
The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying,  “Here now is the man  who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!”  Psalm 52:6,7

Imagine the man whose trust is in his wealth on the last day. It isn’t that great wealth is the problem −it is all dependent on where the confidence rests. The man whose wealth determines his immoral character has already lost in life and death. Wealth can begin to form us into his servant even though many may think they are in control. However, when wealth begins to destroy others, then man has started serving wealth.

The righteous will see and fear not the sight of wealth, but God. They may have the same temptations as others with wealth, but they haven’t become consumed with the thought of continually becoming wealthier but rather serving God with their wealth. Placing confidence in who God is will keep us still and content in our hearts instead of chasing treasures of this world.

Unfortunately, the material consumption is a god of this world, and it lingers all around, tempting us to believe its lie. The false identity it offers says success is in the accumulation of wealth and treasures of this world. Even well-meaning people of faith may define success by the number in their bank account. But the poor souls are those who have chosen to live by the lie and end with the accumulation of his wealth but have lost real life.
